A replacement for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson. Mukuba is a ball hawk, about 5’11” and 186 pounds. He had five interceptions in 2024 and 212 career tackles during his time at both Texas and Clemson.
Lance Zierlein gave Mukuba a fourth-round grade and wrote this draft profile blurb:
“Four-year starter who plays the game with the instincts and awareness of a player who has seen a lot of football. Mukuba has the athleticism to play in the slot but is best when he’s able to read the field as a “robber” and use his instincts, burst and ball skills to make plays. He moves efficiently in coverage, but that efficiency can get away from him in run support, where he races in too hot and misses tackles. Mukuba possesses the character, physicality and playmaking instincts that will draw NFL teams to him as a future starter.”
Mukuba graded very well at PFF. He was given a 90.0, which was third-best at his position. He was targeted just 23 times and allowed 10 receptions for 74 yards with zero touchdowns. He added six PBUs to the interception number and logged a brilliant 12.1 passer rating when thrown at. Looking through some of these profiles, it looks like the concern is tackling and run support, a little bit of over-aggression and diving at legs at times. Apparently his wingspan isn’t amazing and he’s a little undersized for a safety, but he likes to get up to the line and mix it up. He looked solid enough in the Texas games I watched, and with CJGJ traded, hopefully he replaces some of the takeaway production and grittiness in the secondary. In Howie Roseman and Vic Fangio we trust.
Andrew Mukuba may just have the best tape of the entire Safety class.
Incredible instincts in coverage. Fearless attacking the ball downhill.
The issue teams will have is his weight (186).The best and most valuable Safeties in the NFL impact the game in multiple ways. Mukuba… pic.twitter.com/r0cStfe5pV
