The Phillies lost 7-5 to the Braves on Tuesday night and one of the killer plays took place in the bottom of the 2nd, when a miscommunication between Edmundo Sosa and Johan Rojas saw a routine fly ball fall harmlessly to the ground:

Sean Murphy homered later in the inning to give the Braves a 3-1 lead.

Todd Zolecki at MLB.com reported that Rojas took responsibility for the error:

“You! You! You!” Sosa shouted to Rojas in Spanish.

An outfielder is not supposed to say anything unless they are calling for the ball. But Sosa’s words blended into the crowd noise, and Rojas thought Sosa was calling for it. Still, Rojas is in charge as the center fielder. He should have called off Sosa.

“That’s my responsibility over there,” Rojas said. “That ball is mine. I have to catch it. There’s no excuse.”

Sosa is not a left fielder, so an added complication there, but as Rojas says, it’s the center fielder’s responsibility. He’s not exactly in the lineup for his hitting, so when there are shortcomings in the field, they are rightly amplified and scrutinized

Not the only miscue or missed opportunity in this game, however. Zack Wheeler had a rare off night, giving up five runs on eight hits over five and a third innings. Orion Kerkering had Marcell Ozuna 0-2 in the bottom of the seventh before walking him. The bottom of the order couldn’t add to the nine hits put together by the top five. This was a 5-3 game at one point and the Phils couldn’t hold the lead. On to the next one.
