Governor Shapiro May Have to Join the Eagles Beat After Interviewing Vic Fangio
Governor Shapiro has been through a lot lately. First, he went to Pagan’s apartment to record a podcast. Then someone tried to burn down his house. Now he’s out here interviewing Eagles defensive coordinator and Super Bowl champion Vic Fangio:
Gotta say, it’s a pretty good interview. If the Gov decides to pivot out of politics, he could find a Barbara Walters-type gig, speaking with people from all walks of life. Or maybe he joins the Eagles beat and shows up at training camp this summer trying to yell over 40 other people who are trying to get a question in. “Nick – Nick – yeah over here, left side with the two security guards – just wondering if you have an injury update on Charley Hughlett; will he be long-snapping this week?”
You also have to laugh because you know there are people out there thinking, “how does the Governor have time to do this? stop interviewing people and fix the potholes! lower taxes!” Stuff like that. “Get back to Harrisburg and fix it!”
They didn’t get into anything super deep, but this exchange about the Super Bowl parade was a good one:
Shapiro: How many beers did you catch?
Fangio: I caught a few. I didn’t drink them though.
Shapiro: I was a few buses behind you. Folks were firing those beers at us. I remember thinking, ‘god, I’m lucky I didn’t get hit,’ then I saw Howie at the end and he was bloodied in the forehead.’
Fangio: Well the story behind that is in the parade after they won in 2017, the Eagles weren’t allowing any beer on the buses. So the players were begging the crowd for it. There was beer on the buses this time, hopefully (with the thought that) there wouldn’t be that throwing, but there was still the throwing.
But it was amazing, that parade, you feel the passion of Philadelphia. You know, I see kids on the their father, big brother, grandfather’s shoulders, seeing that for the first time when they’re eight, nine, 10, 11 years old. That’s how this stuff, the passion gets passed down. That makes a major impact on young kids and now they’re Eagles diehards. I can’t tell you how many people have thanked me in the last couple of months. Not just saying thank you for winning the game and the championship, but a heartfelt thank you for the memories and what you’ve done for their families.
Good stuff. If you watched any of the Fangio press conferences this season, you know he delivers very short and blunt answers. He’s not a guy who does a lot of talking at all, so getting 30 minutes of him 1v1 was interesting to watch.
disclaimer: this is not a political post. if Pennsylvania had a Republican Governor and he or she interviewed Vic Fangio, we would blog about it
