After the Steelers passed on Shedeur Sanders at #21, the Giants got back into the first round, but not for Sanders. They took Jaxson Dart at #25 overall:

There was pre-draft buzz that Brian Daboll was a big Dart fan. Sure enough, they used the third-overall pick on Abdul Carter, waited, then sent three picks to Houston to climb back into the first round and get their guy.

Dart was a good college quarterback at Ole Miss, playing in Lane Kiffin’s offense. Most of the draft profiles have him labeled as a backup initially who can develop into a starter. One profile comped him to Gardner Minshew, while another called him a “souped-up Christian Ponder.” A third profile I saw referred to him as Carson Wentz “with less arm strength.” Naturally, Eagles fans probably see descriptors like that and aren’t exactly struck with fear. But you’re probably not going to see much of Dart against the Birds this year, if at all, considering that they’ll roll out Russell Wilson and look to develop Dart into their QB of the future. Daboll and Joe Schoen survived the Daniel Jones era and they drafted a QB they like, so we’ll see if that pulls the Giants out of the NFC East basement.

Note, as well, that we’re going to hear the Shedeur Sanders disrespect narrative. There are a lot of folks out there who think he’s better than Dart, and find it unfathomable that he has fallen this far.
