Pulled Up to Los Angeles to Watch Penn State Beat USC in Overtime
Los Angeles might see beautiful weather every day, but USC fans did not have a good time on Saturday. They were on the brink of upsetting #4 Penn State and they absolutely blew it. Down 20-6 at halftime, Penn State sent it to overtime 30-30 after a dominating second half, and USC’s kicker blew a field goal. Penn State drove a couple yards, nailed a short field goal of their own, and won the game 33-30. I watched the game at a campus bar at USC, and it felt so good being the only one cheering in that bar. I couldn’t believe they pulled the comeback, totally worth the trip from Philly:
@noshortsusa subtle foreshadowing penn state vs usc
After the game I walked around campus shirtless, with a big white “P” painted on my chest and tried to egg on some USC fans. Not a peep. Honestly, I don’t think they cared very much. That’s LA sports culture in a nutshell. One group of guys tried to grab my nipples (unsuccessful) which was very weird and one guy just walked into me. Maybe two dudes yelled “fuck you” or something, but for the most part people just ignored me. My buddy who was filming wore a kelly green eagles shirt, and at least 70 people yelled “Go Birds” at us. I absolutely love Philly sports culture.
The more I travel to other cities, the more I realize there’s a reason that Philly sports tickets are usually more expensive than in LA, NYC, and Miami. Even though there’s way less people around Philly, everybody cares so much more. It wasn’t just the Penn State fans yelling “Go Birds,” we met plenty of USC fans who repped Philly. Eagles fans are everywhere.
Side note- I can’t believe Penn State was ever ranked 4th in the country. They are not better than Georgia and Alabama. The way they do rankings is so dumb. They value being “undefeated” way too much. Penn State struggled against Bowling Green and USC, both unranked teams. I do think Penn State showed streaks of greatness during the second half vs USC. Converting back-to-back 4th and longs late in the game showed Allar had a lot of poise, and the defense stepped up when it needed to. Still, I don’t want to get my hopes up.
