Kelly Green is the color of Norm Van Brocklin, Chuck Bednarik, and the 1960 NFL Champions. It’s the color that Jaws and Harold Carmichael wore en route to the 1980 NFC title. It was worn by Pro Bowlers like Reggie White, Eric Allen, and Randall Cunningham. Now it’ll be worn by Super Bowl champions Jason Kelce and Lane Johnson, and hopefully future champions Jalen Hurts and DeVonta Smith.

It’s been more than 25 years since the Eagles switched to the Midnight Green motif, wearing black and white to match. You likely recall the 2010 season-opening throwback game, where the Birds wore Kelly Green for one day only, a 27-20 loss to the Packers in which Kevin Kolb had to exit with a concussion. Michael Vick rallied the Birds, who fell just short in a comeback bid but looked pretty sick while doing it.

A Kelly Green revival was always on Jeffrey Lurie’s mind, but impossible to execute because the NFL previously had a rule limiting teams to a single color for helmets. That made matching the Kelly Green jerseys to Midnight Green helmets impossible. It clashed so bad that even color blind Eagles fans could tell.

Thankfully the NFL scrapped the “one helmet” rule in 2021, paving the way for throwback efforts and more uniform combinations, which we’ll see this season. According to Jeff McLane at the Inquirer, the Birds will debut the Kelly Greens on October 22nd against the Miami Dolphins.
