This clip is being circulated through Philly sports social media. It’s Tom Green doppelganger Nick Wright talking about Howie Roseman’s drafting:

“his draft mimics the consensus media big boards more than any other GM, which is why every year people are like ‘Howie did it again!'”

Huh? Does it? Maybe in recent years when he just took Bama and Georgia guys, but was Jalen Reagor a consensus 1st rounder? Jalen Hurts a consensus 2nd rounder for a team with a franchise QB on a huge contract? That part of the clip is weird, but there’s a somewhat reasonable generality that he stumbles ass backwards into. It’s this idea that everything Howie does is some sort of magic, like the guy is always working some wizardry that nobody else knows how to do.

In 2024, he:

  • stayed at 22 and took the best corner on the board, in a draft where the first 14 picks were all offensive players
  • traded up in the second round to get another corner
  • took a project EDGE in the third round
  • got an RB2 candidate in the fourth
  • got Jeremiah Trotter’s son later in the draft than he was projected to go
  • found some WR3 challengers
  • found late round offensive line depth

It was a good draft, but who are these people out here giving him an A+? Give it a solid B, B+, A- if you want. The first two picks were quality. The third rounder is a total question mark and then it’s generally a crapshoot from there. Accruing the 2025 assets is important. Like most GMs, you hit on some, miss on others, work up and down the board, etc. But Howie Roseman has never been the world’s greatest drafter. Even just drafting the best guys out of UGA and Bama hasn’t been a slam dunk yet, not until we see if Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith, and Nakobe Dean can take the next step.

I think we sometimes lose sight of these things because the “Howie szn” stuff is totally abused. Howie Roseman restructures a contract- “oh my God he did it again!” Howie trades a fourth and a fifth to move up in the fourth – “oh man he did it again!” You’d get 200 tweets slurping Howie if he successfully ordered a Baconator from the Wendy’s drive through. Fleecing the Titans for A.J. Brown is one thing, but staying there at 22 and drafting the best guy at your biggest position of need isn’t some groundbreaking maneuver. It’s kind of like the Chris Rock skit, the concept of giving people credit for “some shit they’re supposed to do.”

Howie is a really good GM. Eagles fans are lucky to have him. But there’s a portion of the fan base who thinks the guy walks on water, and it’s a little odd.

Anyway, this was my favorite Nick Wright skit:
